Investing in the Future of Birth Work
The future of birth work depends on well-trained, compassionate care providers. That’s why bebo mia continues to invest in aspiring doulas through scholarships that make full spectrum doula training more accessible. This story highlights one recipient taking the next step toward supporting families.
A Motherhood Journey That Changed Everything
Hey y’all! My name is Becca Fregoso (she/her). I am a stay at home mom from North Florida, born and raised. I have such a love/hate relationship with my city, but I never want to leave, especially after moving to a part of town that is entirely different and so much more diverse in comparison to the area I grew up in. I’ve been married to my husband, Isaac for what will be five years in December.
I am a mother of a two of a two-and-a-half year old boy and a three month old girl. When I was twenty-two I had a semi-traumatic birth with my son at the hospital, where I ended up deferring from my birth plan and opting for an epidural that I originally didn’t want and it wasn’t even effective. During and after my birthing experience, the treatment I received from the healthcare professionals contributed to my postpartum depression. The crux of it all was that I was neglected, coerced and felt entirely dismissed. Eighteen months later, I had discovered I was pregnant again with my daughter. I immediately recoiled and repulsed by the knowledge that I was pregnant again, as shameful as that sounds. I had to do so much mental work before I felt thankful for my pregnancy with my daughter. It took me seven months, all due to my previous birthing and postpartum experience with my son. Thankfully the birthing experience I had with my daughter was well prepped for, and planned and executed at home, mostly on my terms and altogether very healing. I was drawn to doula work after listening to the birthing stories of my friends, family and of course the two wholly contrasting experiences of my own.
Turning Personal Experience Into Purpose
I wanted the bebomia scholarship because I poured so much of myself and my finances into growing my daughter last year and the choice I made to have the birthing experience that I dreamed of and knew that I deserved. By the time It finally clicked I that wanted to pursue birthwork, my finances had been drained. In a better time or even a better year, my family and I would have possibly been able to budget better for it.
I chose bebomia, because I align with their core values and philosophies, I love inclusivity and kindness. I do believe we need to be actively contributing to this, because the world isn’t getting any kinder as Bianca always loves to say.
Advocating for the Birth Experiences Families Deserve
I’m a very proud recipient of the Birth Justice Award. My past although difficult has definitely contributed to the person I am today. It has taught me that my voice matters and how crucial it is to make ourselves heard. I’m so thankful that I get the opportunity to speak up for others and advocate in a way that was not done for me. I do believe that a doula’s presence in the birth space should be a basic human right and I plan to work towards making it one. I’m so excited to be part of this growing community and so thankful that bebomia chose me to be a part of their community in as well.
Building a Practice That Centers Equity
Since I do live in a larger city, I do plan on beginning the growth of my business through word of mouth. I’m able to network quite a bit through local parenting groups, the people that attend them and their friends. Once I’m a bird more established and have a few births under my belt, I plan to take my business online. I plan to mainly serve plus sized birthing people, people of color and multicultural families as those are communities that I have been affected by my entire life and have personally witnessed the injustices that occur within them.
