Babes… we need to talk about this one. Because this is one of the biggest traps in the doula world and it gets so many people every single year.
You start looking into doula training, you get excited, maybe a little nervous, and then you see it.
A weekend course.
A low price.
A quick path to your doula certification.
And your brain goes, “Perfect. Let’s not overcomplicate this.” You picture yourself in just a week or two, being a rockstar doula getting people their dream birth. There are tears and it is just like all the Instagram videos you have binged for months (years maybe?)
Honestly? That makes sense.
Of course you are going to look for something that feels fast and doable. Especially if you are already balancing kids, work, a household, and about a thousand invisible tasks no one thanks you for.
But here is the truth.
Cheap doula training is almost always the most expensive option you can choose. Always.
Weekend Doula Training Feels Like a Shortcut… But It Isn’t
Weekend trainings are designed to feel efficient.
They promise that you can learn everything you need in a few days and walk away ready to support clients as a birth doula or postpartum doula.
And technically, you can learn a little information that quickly. Adults max out after 2 or 3 hours, shorter if you live with invisible disabilities or chronic health issues. Sooooo, that means you are unable to keep trying to stuff info into a tapped out brain and body.
Also, learning something and being able to actually do it are two very different things.
Birth is not a checklist.
Postpartum is not a script.
People are not predictable.
The system we work in is pretty complicated and hierarchical and political and you need to understand that too.
Supporting someone through labor, or those first raw days after birth, requires more than information. It requires integration. It requires practice. It requires confidence that only comes from actually working through the material over time.
This is exactly why the weekend model falls short, and we break that down in detail here ← seriously, head over and read this.
Because when training is rushed, the learning does not land. And when the learning does not land, you are left second guessing yourself when it matters most.
Doula work is a skilled trade. It cannot be taught in the same amount of time as the babysitting course tweens take.
What Actually Happens After the Weekend Doula Training?
This is the part no one tells you when you sign up.
You finish your course, you go home and start plugging away on your certification requirements. Alone. After some amount of time you finish them, email them in and wait to see if you pass. Let’s assume you do (good job!) So, now you get your doula certification, and for a moment you feel amazing.
And then reality sets in.
You are like… wait.
Am I actually ready to support someone through birth?
What do I do if something unexpected happens?
How do I even get clients?
And so you do what most people do.
You start looking for more training.
Maybe a lactation course.
Maybe a postpartum course.
Maybe something on trauma informed care.
Maybe a business program because no one taught you how to run a doula business.
And before you know it, you have spent way more than you would have on a comprehensive online doula training program in the first place.
Plus all the extras.
Membership fees.
Recertification fees.
Continuing education requirements.
It adds up quickly.
And the hardest part?
It still often feels fragmented and so much of it means you get instructions then are kicked from the nest. Our founder, Bianca Sprague, did 4 weekend certifications and never saw or talked to her trainers again. Like ever. And she has been a doula for almost 20 years!
You Are Left To Figure It Out Alone After a Cheap or Weekend Doula Training.
Here is where cheap training really shows its cracks.
When something is low cost and fast, there is no room built in for support. Because they organization cannot afford to offer extras when the course itself is such a low cost.
There is no one walking with you as you learn.
No one to ask when something feels confusing.
No one helping you process your first client experiences.
Because that kind of support takes time, structure, and people. And those things cost money to provide.
So instead, you are out there trying to piece together your confidence while also trying to figure out how to actually build a business.
And that is a lot.
This is one of the biggest reasons why so many people never fully step into working as a full spectrum doula or even a birth or postpartum doula after their initial training. Y’all, the stats are over 90% of people who take a weekend training DO NOT go on to work as a doula.
Not because they are not capable. But because they were never properly supported.
This Is Why So Many Doulas Don’t Continue
We do not talk about this enough.
A huge percentage of people who take fast or cheap trainings do not go on to build a sustainable career as a doula.
And it is not a motivation issue. It is a preparation issue which super breaks our hearts because they were excited and wanted to do more with their life and they found the time and money to take the training… Heck, maybe even travelled to make it happen. Then they were failed by these organizations.
They were not taught how to get clients.
They were not taught how to price their services.
They were not taught how to navigate real life situations.
They were not given the scaffolding to grow.
So the work feels overwhelming. And when something feels overwhelming and unsupported, most people step away. Not because they failed. But because the training failed them.
What Good Doula Training Actually Feels Like
A strong doula school experience feels completely different.
You are not rushed.
You have time to absorb what you are learning. To reflect. To ask questions. To come back and revisit things when they click differently and talk to a real life person in real time.
You are supported while you are learning and after.
You understand not just what a doula does, but how to actually show up for real people in real situations.
You learn how to build a doula business that works with your life.
You are not left guessing.
And that kind of hands-on mentorship and support changes everything for you, you sweet and nurturing human.
Because the goal is not just to become certified. The goal is to become someone who can walk into a room and actually support a family with confidence and competence.
So What Should You Take From This About Doula Training?
This is not about saying you need to spend the most money possible but it is about understanding what you are investing in.
If something is cheap and fast, ask yourself what is missing. Because in doula work, what is missing will show up later when you are trying to support someone and you do not feel ready. And trust us, that is not a great place to be.
Final Thoughts about Doula Training
A cheap doula training feels like a safe choice when you are already doubting yourself for some reason about your ability to be a doula. It feels less risky.
But it often creates more stress, more cost, and more confusion down the line.
If you want to become a birth doula, postpartum doula, or full spectrum doula, you deserve training that actually prepares you for the work.
Because this work matters. And you should feel ready when you step into it.
If you are thinking about becoming a doula, start with a solid online doula training or doula certification that will take care of you the whole time.
