What Is a Doula Cert Transfer and Is It Right for You?

Listen up, if you are a certified doula who has been feeling disappointed with your doula education and alumni experience, this one is for you.

Maybe you finished your certification and felt underprepared

Maybe you are paying annual recertification fees, membership fees, listing fees, and CEU costs and wondering what exactly you are getting for all of that.

Maybe you have been at a birth and felt the gap between what you learned and what you actually needed in the room.

Maybe you have been trying to find clients and don’t know what you are doing wrong and are trying to figure it out from watching TikTok tutorials…

A couple of weeks ago, Kelly and I were at a doula conference together… We don’t get to be in the same province very often so this was really exciting for us. Person after person came up to us and said some version of the same thing. “I trained with [organization name] and I feel so unprepared.” or “There are so many fees. It is not what I thought it was going to be.” or “I wish I had found you guys before I gave [organization name] the money I had saved from my tuition.”

Kelly and I kept looking at each other across the table because we hear this constantly. People go into these wildly subpar training programs because there are a couple of big brand names that stand out in the doula training world.

But the education is often antiquated, the support after graduation is basically zero, and people come out feeling commodified. They paid their tuition and did not get what they were promised. And they have to pay annual fees… FOREVER!

I know this firsthand because I did a weekend training for my birth doula certification. And then another one for postpartum doula. And my childbirth educator certification. And my lactation educator certification. And then I discovered exactly how many fees I had to keep paying just to hold those certifications.

Fees to maintain.

Fees to recertify.

Fees to stay listed.

Fees that never ended.

So I built bebo mia. And I made one rule from the start: you pay your tuition and you never pay us again. Full stop.

In fact, we believe your training organization should be updating your education and providing continuing education and business support as part of what you already paid for. That is just how it should work.

Why so many doulas end up here

The pattern we see is heartbreaking and it is also completely fixable.

Doulas train with one of the big name organizations because they trust the brand or they come up a lot when you search. These excited doulas to be complete a weekend or a short program. They get their certificate. And then reality sets in. They do not feel ready for what they encounter in birth spaces. The business side was barely touched. The advocacy content was thin. Nobody taught them how to recognize medical coercion in real time, how to support a client through an unexpected cesarean, how to spot postpartum mood disorders early, or how to actually build a sustainable practice.

And on top of all of that, they now have to keep paying the organization or they lose their certification. Which is not just annoying, it also has real consequences!

Losing your certification impacts your liability insurance.

It can affect any credentialing or contracting you are doing with insurance programs.

It is a financial trap parading around as a professional standard.

As you know, I will not stop speaking out about antiquated, practice based education like weekend doula trainings. Read more about why here.

What a cert transfer actually means

Here is the thing we want you to know: the work you have already done does not have to go to waste.

Any training, any births attended, any books you have read, any client experience you have built with your current organization all counts toward your bebo mia certification.

We are not asking you to start over.

We are asking you to come get what you should have had from the beginning…

And because you have already invested somewhere else, the doula training cert transfer is 50% off the regular tuition. We do not want the cost to be a barrier. You already spent money on training. We want to make it as easy as possible for you to land somewhere that will actually take care of you. For your whole doula career.

What you can do with your current certification

You have two options and we support whatever you decide:

  1. You can hold dual certifications, keeping your existing cert while adding bebo mia to your credentials.
  2. Or you can let go of your other organization entirely and stop paying the lifelong fees they are expecting from you.

What you actually get when you transfer

Everything a new student gets, which is genuinely a lot:

  1. Lifetime access to all 16 training modules.
  2. Eighteen weekly live classes, all recorded.
  3. A private online classroom.
  4. Guest speakers.
  5. Ongoing mentorship, including real support when you are nervous about your first client or working through a difficult birth.
  6. Business skills classes covering self-worth, marketing, copywriting, money, and community building. The business scaffolding and the community that most doulas never got the first time around.
  7. And the Birth Worker Mental Health Support Group. Free therapy, for life, included in your tuition. Yes, really. A safe space to process the emotional weight of this work with people who actually get it. It is available to you whenever you need it, not just while you are in school.

No recertification fees. No membership fees. No listing fees. No hidden costs of any kind.

The recertification process at bebo mia is reflective, not financial. Every two years you complete a short exercise to check in with yourself. No bill attached.

You are in. Forever. And we are so, so proud of this, sweet doula.

Is a cert transfer right for you?

Here are a few things we want you to check in with you about… consent is super key in everything that we do…

  1. Do you feel confident walking into a hospital birth and knowing exactly what to do when something does not go as planned?
  2. Do you have a sustainable practice with clients coming in consistently?
  3. Do you have a community of doulas you can call after a hard birth?
  4. Are you paying ongoing fees to maintain a certification that is not giving you ongoing support in return?

If any of that landed, it is worth a conversation with us. I will jump on to a call with anyone that wants to talk. Click here and let’s chat.

Ready to check out the Doula Training Certification Transfer? You can find out more and get started here.

Or email [email protected] and Kelly will take care of you from there. We also offer free doula career strategy sessions if you want to talk it through before you decide.

You already did the work to get certified, you deserve a training organization that actually takes care of you in return.

xoxo Bianca, founder of bebo mia inc.
