How do doulas find clients?

[wpseo_breadcrumb]

Babes… this is the question that is MOST asked by all you awesome birth nerds who want to make your love of birth and babies into a sustainable business.

This is after you had to deep dive the “how do I become a doula?” or “which doula school should I choose?” questions. We bet you had a million tabs open as you explored this!! Ugh, why does it seem SO confusing!

Now you are at the next stage and this is where you are stuck:

How do doulas actually find clients?

This is the part that makes or breaks your doula business.

And, sadly, this is also the part that most trainings barely touch. Real talk, when our founder did her weekend training (they have to go, y’all read here why!), they literally told her to print business cards and make a webpage. What? What are either of those things going to do for growing a business??

So let’s talk about it honestly, because there is a lot of noise out there and very little of it is helpful.

The lie we get told about finding doula clients

Somewhere along the way, people started believing that if you just:

Make an Instagram
Post consistently
Use the right hashtags

…clients will magically appear.

And listen. Social media can help sort of, but it is a terrible foundation for a doula business. Unless you do have a background in digital marketing, you are competing with folks who are experts in this. They are making content that is filling your potential client’s feeds. But they are not local doulas most likely.

People are just not seeing your posts. So see your social media like a message board once you direct folks to go there. Keep it up to date with what is happening for you, but don’t try to have your posts trump the billions of pieces of content going up daily.

Because no one is choosing a certified birth doula the same way they choose a candle or a sweater.

It is intimate and expensive work we do as doulas. People are choosing someone to be with them during some of the most vulnerable, intense, life changing moments of their lives.

They are not making that decision because of a Reel.

They are making that decision because they trust you.

And trust does not come from passive scrolling – it comes from you being in active in the community that you want to serve and having other people talk about you and recommend you.

If you do not like social media or if you are only getting 4 likes on your posts and they are all your family members, click here. ← Really click it and this will change your business SO much!

Where most doula clients actually come from

They come from people. Like, real people.

People who have met you, heard about you, or experienced your care in some way.

This is why so many doulas say their best referrals come from:

Past clients
Friends of clients
Midwives and healthcare providers
Community connections

Ok, ok, if you are a new doula and feeling a bubble of panic, it is alright, we’ve got you.

Because if you are just starting out, you are like…

“Cool… but I don’t have past clients yet.”

Right?

That’s normal.

The strategy we have for you here will still work. Like, really well. No, you don’t have clients but you do still have a lot of folks who know you and who you have helped in lots of ways  in the past.

Check out this tool to grow your business fast.

Your first clients come from proximity, not perfection

Your first few clients are usually closer than you think.

People you already know or someone you know knows them.
People in your extended network.
People in your community.

This might look like:

Someone you went to school with
A parent from your kid’s class
A friend of a friend

This is why waiting until everything is “perfect” before you start talking about your work is such a trap and it will prolong you just getting out there and perfecting as you go.

You don’t need a full brand. You need conversations. Lots of them. And yes, it can feel awkward at first, but this is how momentum starts.

If you want a deeper breakdown of this, go read (right now!). Because this part is everything for getting started and getting busy with paid clients.

Community building works better than content for your doula business

We are going to say this again, louder.

Your business will grow faster through community than through content.

That means:

Showing up in real spaces
Connecting with other professionals
Letting people know what you do
Building relationships over time

This will go so much faster than spending over an hour a day on social media making content (and be honest, getting sucked into the vortex of your feed every time you open the app.)

Community building is stronger and sustainable and ripples for years to come.

Because when someone hears your name from a trusted source, you skip a huge part of the “convincing” process. They already trust you so you are not selling yourself.

This is exactly what we teach inside our business tools in the biz shop, because it works.

Simple outreach scripts.
Ways to start conversations.
Ways to follow up without being weird.

These are small actions, but they compound fast and we made all the tools so wildly affordable so that it is a no brainer for you!

The 15 minute tasks that change everything

This is something we teach all the time.

Finding clients does not require hours and hours of work every day.

It requires consistency.

A couple of 15 minute tasks per day can completely shift your business.

Reaching out to someone
Following up with a connection
Sharing what you do
Checking in with a past contact

That’s it.

You will grow with small, repeatable actions. This is how you build a doula business that actually expands exponentially. It can feel like nothing is happening at first. And when we say ‘at first’ this could be days or a few weeks. But then suddenly your contact form or phone or DMs start having requests. And those requests expand into more and more and more.

Then, before you know it, your client roster is full.

Why your doula training matters for getting birth or postpartum clients

This is where we get a little spicy… because not all in person or online doula training programs prepare you for this.

Some programs focus entirely on birth or postpartum support, which is important, yes. But then you finish and you are like…

“Ok… now how do I actually get clients?”

And no one has answers. This is one of the biggest reasons people struggle and this is why we have a full business program within our doula trainings. Don’t worry, we are here to help if you did not take one of our courses.

Folks who take weekend trianings typically do not have success with their businesses (sadly 90% fail after a weekend training) and it is not that they are bad doulas. It is that they were not taught how to build a business.

If you want to understand this more, read. Because this gap is real.

Different types of doulas, same core strategy

Whether you are a:

birth doula
postpartum doula
fertility doula

Antepartum doula

Loss or bereavement doula

Abortion doula

Death doula

The core strategy is the same. People hire people they trust.

The difference is where your community hangs out or shops or attends events or receives care.

Birth doulas might connect more with prenatal spaces.
Postpartum doulas might connect more with new parent groups.
Fertility doulas might build relationships with clinics or therapists.

But the foundation is still connection.

What actually builds momentum for your doula business?

Once you get your first few clients, everything starts to shift.

Because now you have:

Experience
Stories
Testimonials
Confidence

And most importantly, referrals. Here is how to monetize your referrals.

This is where things start to feel easier. But you have to get through that first stage. And that first stage is built on showing up, not waiting.

So… how do doulas find clients?

Not through perfect branding or by going viral.

You get clients through connection and consistency and through being visible in real ways. This can mean you are volunteering within your community or hosting events (free, low cost and living wage fees). You can start initiatives like a diaper drive or baby goods donation space. Through doing good work and letting people talk about it.

If you are building your doula business right now and feeling like this part is hard, you are not doing anything wrong. You are just in the early stage.

Keep going.

Because once it clicks, it really clicks. And you have to keep doing real things that will engage with real people.

And if you want tools that actually help you do this in real life, go explore what we have in the biz shop.

Because this is the part that turns a certification into a career.
