Zuri Harrison – “Queers for Queer Care” Award Doula Training Scholarship Winner March 2022
Hey guys, my name is Zuri Harrison a member of the African American & LGBT community. I will be becoming a doula, because I feel it is pertinent to have someone who is solely advocating for the birthing party and/or partner. I have seen not only in my own life but other mothers so overwhelmed with everyday life on top of growing another being. That when they go to routine prenatal appointments we’ll just go with the route they choose with no thought inputted on if that’s what they really want, is certain procedures necessary, are they just thinking in the aspect of profit gains and not my health.
I had a horrible experience with my 1st pregnancy.
From epidural needles breaking in my back causing me to have a negative reaction. Nurses that didnt have my best interest at heart. But the biggest one is that I never felt like my voice was heard I experience significant weight loss and all that I got in return was a lot of prescriptions recommended. I feel that Mothers should be informed to the fullest which includes other natural methods to combat issues that may arise. I’ve always wanted my career to involves either emotional or physical support for others since I was little.
Being the oldest of 7 (originally 5 but an additional 2 step siblings). It was in my nature to be nuturing and give people a different way to look at how to handle emotions. And becoming a mother made it even more clear on what my purpose of life is. While you don’t need a certification to practice being a doula. I’ve always been a person that always wants to keep learning ways to improve. I also love the fact that being apart of this program will allow me to be part of a community that encourages women empowerment.
I love that bebo mía will still keep in contact and offer mentors even after the program is completed.

I think it is great you guys will still keep in contact and off mentors.
My philosophy is the least amount of medical intervention necessary and enjoy simply supporting and monitoring the health of my mom’s and their babies. Birthing is a normal, natural process that our body was perfectly made to experience. Unless a complication does occurs. Then I would help support her making informed choices about what is best for her and her baby based on her individual and beliefs. My main goal is for her to give birth as she wishes in an environment in which she feels nurtured and secure, and her emotional well-being and personal preferences are respected.
I plan to continue networking and I have many ideas to contribute to my llc that i’m in the process of creating. My main objective will be providing affordable maternal support however, Humblebee Baby will be a business that has something for every member of a household. I plan on partnering with “Motivated Mama” a great group of women who have a support group that meets 2x a week. Once I get my certification in fitness and yoga I’ll be able to host a 30 minute cool down after our talks. I’ll be partnering with “Love Unlimited Llc” to provide affordable childcare for self care moments needed for both parents as well as time for older siblings to have interactive activities on how they will be a great big brother or sister. Because kids need reassurance too <3 Humblebee Baby will also provide natural made products such as oils, salves, herbal teas, and placenta encapsulation. While I’ve made them for myself and 1 client I am looking into getting it fda approved.
Stay tuned for more from your future certified Doula!
