Turn These 3 Household Items into a Pregnancy Test

pregnancy test

With the price of home pregnancy tests running at about $20 a pop, planning your baby can end up costing a pretty penny. Well, we love a DIY challenge, so the bebo mia girls started researching other options… heck, women had to figure out if they were pregnant before the days of digital home testing, right?!

Well, we had a huge list of pregnancy tests DIY-styles and we want to share the three easiest ones:

Just use sugar – This works best in the morning when urine is most concentrated. Put a few teaspoons of sugar in a large bowl and then urinate into the bowl of sugar (charming, we know).

    • Test will be negative if sugar dissolves
    • Test will be positive if sugar clumps (the pregnancy hormone HCG prevents the sugar from dissolving)

Just use bleach – Again, do this test using the first urine in the morning. Collect your urine. In another glass bowl pour a ¼ cup of bleach. Add a tablespoon of urine to the bleach bowl. The fumes from this reaction can be noticeable, so consider doing the test  by an open window.

    • Test will be negative if nothing occurs
    • Test will be positive if the mixture starts to foam

Just use vinegar – Common theme, use your morning urine and add it to a cup of vinegar (it seems any will do). There is some room for error with this one as the amount of each liquid to add is up for debate and the degree of colour change may be minimal.

    • Test will be negative if there is no colour change
    • Test will be positive if there is a colour change.

If you get a ‘positive’ from any of these tests, please see your healthcare provider for confirmation. There are also some natural signs of pregnancy such as a missed period, tender and swollen breasts, heightened sense of smell, or ‘morning sickness’.

We also want to point out that prenatal care is important leading up to your birth, so we suggest that you find a doctor or find a doula that you feel comfortable with. And if you want to avoid an emergency C-Section check it.

Interesting! Wish I knew about this about 7 months ago. The cost of home pregnancy tests are ridiculous.

To be fair, you can get them at the dollar store…but then you don’t get to do science things 😉

I lucked out by marrying a nurse. He just takes them from the ER. Shhh, don’t tell anyone! : )

Who knew?? I must say these ‘science experiments’ seem much more dramatic (and therefore, fitting for the occasion)!

Had absolutely NO idea about these. How accurate are they? Statistically?
