If you are juggling kids, work, pets, aging parents, a demanding schedule, or all of the above, the idea of going back to school can feel impossible. And yet, if you are here reading this, there is something inside you calling you toward doula work.
Something in you wants to support families while advocating for safer and more respectful care. We see you wanting to build a career rooted in compassion and choice for you and your clients. We know you want to witness the magic of birth or hold squishy babies and smell the top of their deliciously scented heads.
It is safe to say you are already the person your friends and family and coworkers go to when they need support, a listening ear, advice or when they’re in crisis. Raise your hand if this is you… *hand flies up*
Here is the good news too many people do not realize. Online doula training is not a compromise. When it is done right, it is one of the strongest and most accessible ways to become a birthworker. And for busy parents and career changers, it can be the most realistic and sustainable path into this profession.
We’ve been saying this for ages… it’s one of the reasons we built bebo mia like we did. We built this to be an online program intentionally rather than after the fact from the COVID pandemic.
Ok, so let’s talk about what to look for in a doula training program, why online education is actually ideal for this type of work, and how you can join the bebo mia community of learners in over 52 countries.
Because we’re obsessed and will not stop talking about this, we will also cover why a weekend crash course does not prepare you to support actual human beings during their reproductive health journeys.
There are clear standards y’all for an online doula training to ensure that it gives you depth, accountability, and a real community behind you. This is not the case for some online trainings in our field, sadly.
We have so many awesome resources we will add throughout this so you can keep learning and get all the information you nee to make this challenging decision. #TheMoreYouKnow
Why Online Doula Training Works So Well for Real Life
Well, there’s so many reasons, the first being pants are optional so already that’s a plus.
But for real, a high quality online doula training allows you to learn in ways that actually fit your life. Busy parents can study during nap time or after bedtime. Career changers can work through modules before or after work. And for anyone navigating shift work, disability, neurodivergence, caregiving duties, or unpredictable schedules, online learning offers flexibility without sacrificing quality.
Plussss, for those of you who live rurally or in areas that don’t get doula training sessions offered, you can jump in, no costly travel needed.
One of the biggest misconceptions is that you need to be in-person to learn doula skills. This is only true if the program you take relies on practice based education, something we discuss in our open letter campaign. A solid doula training goes far, far beyond learning comfort measures. It requires deep understanding, critical thinking, trauma informed care, communication, advocacy, and the ability to hold space. None of those skills come from watching a comfort measure demo for ten minutes in a hotel conference room.
If you want a deeper dive into how to choose a comprehensive program, see our blog Five Questions to Ask Before Signing Up for a Doula Course. It walks you through what responsible programs offer and what weekend trainings leave out.
What Busy Parents Need from a Doula Training Program
If you are balancing parent life with becoming a doula in training, online education is not simply convenient, it is essential. Parents need flexible class times, recordings to revisit later, and a community that understands childcare challenges. We even factor in time zones and offer afternoon and evening classes.
For those of you with littles at home who are dreaming of becoming a doula, you also need instructors who understand the emotional load parents carry. When you join our Maternal Support Practitioner program you learn from educators who are parents, caregivers, queers, survivors, and members of the communities you want to serve. We also know what it is like to be tired, to have kids interrupt class, or to need more time to process emotionally heavy content.

These will show how the real work of being a doula is relational and reflective and definitely not one size fits all!
For those of you who are child-free by choice or circumstance, we talk about how great you are as doulas! We have childfree faculty members who understand the fear or insecurity that can come from being a doula when you have not experienced birth yourself… there are so many pros to be childless in this line of work, and we have some of the reasons why here (follow us while you are there).
Why Online Doula Training Is Ideal for Career Changers
More and more people are entering an online doula training because they are feeling burnt out, underpaid, or are in values misaligned careers. They want to use their empathy and skills in a way that feels meaningful. They want to dictate their own schedule and pick up their kids from school and be able to do their self care and sleep a bit more. For career changers, online learning avoids long commutes, missed work, and the financial barrier of taking time off. Yes, you can be in school while still at your soon-to-be-’old’-job
A solid online program, or any doula training for that matter, actually walks you through everything you need to set up your business from day one. They do not leave you to figure it out alone. They prepare you to work with diverse clients, to understand systemic oppression in healthcare, and to build a business that reflects your values.

The Problem with Weekend Doula Trainings
People who are looking for doula training in Canada and the United States often notice a confusing range of options. You can take a two day course for around $1000 that will have at least $500-$800 PER YEAR in additional fees or you can take a months long certification that actually equips you for real practice with no additional fees. We want to be clear. A weekend course does not prepare you to support families through pregnancy, birth, postpartum, loss, trauma, or complex medical conversations.
This is not our opinion. Research from the NeuroLeadership Institute shows that deep learning requires effort, repetition, reflection, and community feedback. Brene Brown has spoken about this often too, noting that meaningful learning needs desirable difficulty, the kind of challenge that strengthens your thinking the same way a muscle grows from slow, intentional strain. You cannot achieve that in two days.
Both you and the families you will work with deserve more. For that matter, our entire profession deserves more! For the full conversation about why we are pushing for an end to practice based education, you can read our open letter.
What You Can Expect from a Comprehensive Online Doula Training
We did a deep dive here in our blog, What To Look For in A Doula Certification Beyond The Logo. When you join a high quality birth doula training online, postpartum doula training, or full spectrum doula education program, you should expect to be challenged in the best way.
You should expect:
- weekly live classes (like IRL or in an online classroom)
- a structured curriculum
- accountability and certification requirements
- clear expectations for ethical practice
- trauma informed teaching
- skilled instructors who are active practitioners
- community spaces where you can learn from peers
- coaching on business, marketing, and building your roster
- support through your first clients
- real feedback and evaluation
Most importantly, you should expect to feel held and supported through the emotional journey of becoming a doula. Birth and postpartum work touches big feelings and can be quite emotionally intense. If you are doing loss work, it definitely requires grounding. Fertility support requires boundaries and for you to master the skill of having a gentle presence. Real talk, without a real container, students are left overwhelmed and unprepared.
If you want to understand what full spectrum means and why it matters, read Why You Should Become a Full Spectrum Doula.
How Online Doula Training Supports Real World Skill Building
One of the biggest fears new students have is that online learning will not prepare them for hands on support. The truth is that proper online doula training teaches you far more than techniques. It teaches you the thinking behind the techniques. It gives you the language to have critical conversations with your clients. It helps you understand what trauma informed consent looks like. It teaches you to notice small cues in your clients that show fear, uncertainty, or overwhelm.
And it teaches you to work with all types of folks. Our full spectrum training has specific education to work with people living with visible and invisible disabilities, queer folks, racialized folks, neurodiverse families, new comers, people living in fat or big bodies, folks engaging in sex work, young parents and more.
This is what makes you effective with a great training.
Comfort measures can be learned in minutes.
Skillful care is learned through mentorship, reflection, stories and learning from a diverse faculty and proper supervision.
If you want to explore more of this idea, see our short video Beyond Informed Consent which looks at medical coercion and how doulas can support families through difficult conversations.
What to Look For in Doula Training Across Canada, Ontario and the US
If you are specifically seeking doula training in Ontario, doula training in Canada, or doula training in the US wide, pay close attention to the certification requirements. You want a program that tests you, evaluates your learning, and prepares you for actual practice.
Ask about
- instructor qualifications
- supervision
- practicum or case study requirements
- trauma informed framework
- full spectrum curriculum
- mentorship
- recertification expectations
- diversity of faculty and guest speakers
Across the US and Canada, we have seen a rise in quick low cost trainings, many of which do not equip you for real work. If a program does not challenge you, it is not preparing you for practice.
Our Maternal Support Practitioner program includes birth doula training, postpartum doula training, fertility support, abortion and loss support, full business modules, peer support, and a certification process that reflects the depth this work deserves.
Why Online Doula Training Creates Stronger, More Confident Practitioners
We regularly hear from students who enter our program unsure of their ability and leave changed. They leave not only being awesome and well prepared practitioners, but we give so many opportunities for healing and growing personally. All our students and alumni receive free group therapy for life. We want to ensure we have folks who are healed healers out in the world. Our students build confidence, find community, and discover the true depth and breadth of doula work. It is about listening, witnessing, and showing up with grounded care.
Online learning gives you time. Time to reflect and absorb. Time to sit with uncomfortable topics like systemic racism in healthcare, the over medicalization of birth, the staggering rates of mortality especially for Black and Brown folks, and the rising rates of intervention. It also gives you time to practice language, role play scenarios, and ask questions without rushing.
Choosing the Right Doula Path for Your Life
As a busy parent or a career changer, you deserve a learning experience that respects your time, your responsibilities, and your dreams. You deserve a community that welcomes you, challenges you, and celebrates the work you are called to do. (We are really great cheerleaders btw.)
An online doula training can open a door to meaningful work that fits your life. You can build a flexible doula business that supports you and your family. You can be part of changing the landscape of reproductive health and justice, and heavens knows, we need more support for change. We would love to have you so that you can deepen your skills and confidence while staying rooted in your values.
