If you have started looking into a doula course, chances are you felt excited for about five minutes and then immediately overwhelmed.
Suddenly you are staring at dozens of tabs open on your browser. One doula course online promises certification in a weekend. Another birth doula program costs thousands and takes a year. Some doula programs say they are accredited. Others say accreditation does not matter at all. And if you are searching for specific regions like doula courses Ontario or Austin or California, you might feel even more confused because the rules are different depending on where you live.
So let’s slow this down.
Choosing the right doula course is not about finding the fastest or cheapest option – trust us, it will cost you more in the long run. It is about choosing education that actually prepares you for the work, protects clients from harm, and supports you in building a sustainable practice. This is how you prevent burnout and encourage longevity with your business and mission.
Here are the big questions we get every week from folks just like you:
- what is a doula program
- how long is a doula program
- what makes a doula course “good”
- what is the best doula training program
- how to compare doula courses online without losing your mind
We have answers…and we are going to give them to you straight. You’re welcome, babes!
What is a doula program really?
At its most basic level, a doula program is an educational pathway that prepares someone to offer non-medical support during fertility, pregnancy, birth, postpartum, loss, or end of life.
But not all doula programs are created equally.
A solid doula program should include:
- foundational knowledge
- skills practice
- environment and systems for practice
- health and safety
- real world application
- ethics and scope of practice
- trauma-informed care
- support for boundaries and sustainability
- business basics
- self care and sustainability
- understanding of equity seeking groups through the whole program and not just a module that gathers all the communities most harmed by the system (racialized, queer, trans, fat, under-resourced, in recovery or active use, single parents, folks living with disabilities, etc.)
- special circumstances and when things go wrong
A doula program is not just memorizing information. It is professional preparation. We sit at the intersection of therapy, medical advocate, social work, and community care work.
Unfortunately, many doula courses focus on content delivery without integration. You get slides, maybe a workbook (that often costs extra) and sometimes a certificate that you have to pay every year to keep valid with most organizations. And you will get very little practice, feedback, or support for the emotional and relational labor of the work.
This is where people get hurt… and we mean both clients and doulas alike.
If you want to understand why short trainings often fall short, this blog goes deeper into that conversation.
How long is a doula program?
This is one of the most common questions we hear and the most frustrating answer is this:
It depends. We know, ugh to that answer…
A doula program can be anywhere from a weekend to a year or more. But here is what is important to remember: length alone does not equal quality.
Here is what actually matters:
- how much practice is included
- whether learning is spaced or rushed
- if reflection and feedback are built in
- whether real world scenarios are addressed
- is there mentorship
- how long is the support after the course is done
- do you learn how to run a business??
Weekend programs often promise speed and do a high level simple overview. We get so frustrated with this because doula work is not simple. Fertility, birth, postpartum, and loss are complex, emotional, and deeply human experiences. Trying to compress that into a couple days is not realistic.
Longer doula programs that unfold over months allow for integration. You learn something. You reflect. You practice. You come back with questions. You build confidence gradually.
That process matters for you. We want to see competent and confident doulas coming up to take over the torch from those who are slowing down. You will be the next generation!
If a doula course online promises certification in a very short time with little accountability, that is a red flag.
Doula course online vs in person learning
Online doula courses are more popular than ever and for good reason.
They are accessible
They allow flexibility for parents and working folks
They reach people in rural or underserved areas
They can be thoughtfully designed and deeply effective
Want to hear something funny? bebo mia was the first doula training organization to move exclusively online in 2013. Oh boy, it was clunky and we had to learn how to deliver life changing programs in the digital space. We had to build a platform since the teaching platforms available now did not exist.
And oh boy, the community hated us for this! They said you can never learn to be a doula online. They would not let our alumni join some collectives or associations. People were super upset that we were doing this. We mastered it so that students got the in-person experience by teaching live in the digital space.
Fast forward to 2020 and most things had to move online. But here is the issue. People started throwing bad videos up and calling it a day. So yes, you can for sure take an online doula training course however, the market has many that are pretty lacking. You want to find programs that are taught live online rather than just you watching videos. You need to talk to your teachers and be taught in real time.
So, a doula course online is not inherently worse than in person education. The quality depends on the structure and how the content is presented.
Strong online doula courses include:
- live components or discussion spaces
- opportunities for questions and reflection
- case studies and scenario work
- clear expectations and accountability
- ongoing support
Weak online doula courses are often self-paced with little interaction and no feedback.
When evaluating doula courses online, ask yourself:
- Will I be able to ask questions
- Will I hear from real instructors
- Is there community or mentorship
- What happens if I struggle

Birth doula program specifics
A birth doula program should prepare you for far more than labor positions and comfort techniques. Like, so much more.
Birth doulas support people through one of the most intense experiences of their lives. That means education must include:
- physiology of labor
- communication and advocacy
- informed consent
- trauma awareness
- anti-oppressive care
- boundary setting
- prenatal education and preparation
- emotional support throughout pregnancy
- hands on comfort during labor
- support with decision making and informed consent
- protection from harm within the medical system – especially from those in equity seeking groups
- postpartum planning prenatally
- birth mate and/or partner(s) support
- sibling preparation
- immediate postpartum grounding
- infant feeding support
- birth processing
- mental health screening in the first weeks postpartum
A strong birth doula program also acknowledges systemic harm in maternity care and prepares doulas to support clients navigating racism, medical coercion, and power imbalances.
Research shows that continuous labor support improves outcomes so much in many different areas. A large Cochrane Review found lower cesarean rates and higher satisfaction when doulas are present. But those outcomes rely on skilled support, and you need a good training to make that happen.
If you want to understand what actually makes birth doula work sustainable, this blog will get you some answers.
Doula courses Ontario and regional considerations
If you are searching for doula courses Ontario, you might notice that there is no single governing body. Doula care is largely unregulated across Canada and the US.
This means you need to be extra discerning. This is also a great thing because then we are not regulated by the very system we are working to close the gaps within.
Some doula programs are recognized by hospitals or community organizations. Some are not. Some are respected because of depth and reputation rather than formal accreditation. You need to double check this before you hit that register button.
When looking at doula courses Ontario specifically, ask
- Where do graduates work
- How long has this program existed
- What communities does it serve
- Is there ongoing support after graduation
Regulation does not equal quality and lack of regulation does not equal risk. Bebo mia has advocated against regulation, we are however, trying to get the weekend trainings to improve their education so that we can self-govern as an industry (check out our open letter here).
Accreditation and certification myths
Many people ask what the best doula certification program is and often what they really mean is:
- Which certification will hospitals respect
- Which certification is required
- Which certification makes me legitimate
Here is the truth. Hold on to your hats…
There is no single universally recognized best doula certification program. Bam, there we said it. Although, we have to say our MSP full spectrum doula training is pretty darn great!
You want to look at how programs are respected. Ok, there are also a couple founding orgs that everyone knows the name of but they definitely leave a lot to be desired. Just a heads up before you register.
What matters more than accreditation is:
- depth of education
- ethics and values
- quality of instruction
- ongoing support
- community reputation
If a program uses accreditation as a marketing hook without explaining what it actually means, ask more questions.
If you want to understand why we focus on full spectrum education rather than checklists, this blog explains our approach.
Cost of doula programs and what you are really paying for
Doula programs range widely in cost. Some are a few hundred dollars while others are several thousand.
Cost alone does not determine quality… annnnnd, extremely cheap programs often cut corners. There are some expensive ones that are so not worth it too.
Here is a huge beware as you are exploring costs
Please look for the hidden costs.
Your doula training organization should not expect you to pay your tuition and then pay membership fees, exam fees, re-cert fees, continuing education fees, etc. You would be shocked how much it all adds up to! The founder of bebo mia, Bianca Sprague, was a certified doula with 4 certifications from weekend trainings and was spending hundreds of dollars a year to maintain them. She was so frustrated with how much she had to keep paying her organizations, that she started her own organization with NO hidden fees. In fact, bebo mia gives all your continuing education for free!
When you invest in a doula course, you are paying for:
- instructor expertise
- curriculum development
- community support
- mentorship and feedback – make sure it has this!
- long term access to resources – make sure you get this!
Ask what is included:
- Are there live sessions
- Do you get updates
- Is there alumni support
- Are there scholarships or payment plans
Education should be accessible and it should also be ethical.
What is the best doula training program?
This is the question everyone wants answered and the answer is unsatisfying but honest.
The best doula training program is the one that prepares you for real world care and fits your life.
The best doula certification program:
- does not rush learning
- does not minimize emotional labor
- does not pretend weekend trainings are enough
- centers trauma-informed and anti-oppressive care
- offers support beyond graduation
If a program makes big promises without showing how they deliver on them, pause.
If a program encourages curiosity, reflection, and growth, pay attention.
Questions to ask before choosing a doula course
Before you enroll, ask yourself:
- How long is this doula program and why
- What support exists during and after training
- How does this program handle harm and accountability
- What happens if I need help
- Who is this program really for
- Does it help me be set up for success
Choosing a doula course is a big decision and you listen to your gut before registering.
