How Do I Start My Own Doula Business?

[wpseo_breadcrumb]

Babes, this is the question.

You are not just asking about doula training anymore. You are not just curious about becoming a birth doula or a postpartum doula.

You are asking…“How do I actually make this real?”

Because a doula certification is one thing. A doula business is something else entirely.

And this is where most people get stuck.

It is awesome that you are drawn to this work, but now you need to know that your time and tuition investment is going to pay off.

A lot of folks struggle after their training, especially a weekend doula training. Not because they are not capable. But because no one teaches this part properly.

So let’s walk through it in a way that actually makes sense. We want you to see yourself in this role and make it easy to step into client care

Start With the Right Doula Training

Before we talk about clients, websites, or pricing, we need to talk about your foundation. Because if we have a shaky foundation, it is hard to build anything sturdy and sustainable on it! Trust us!

Your online doula training matters more than people think.

Because if your training only teaches you what happens in birth or postpartum, but not how to work with clients, set boundaries, or build a business, you are going to feel lost really fast.

This is one of the biggest gaps in the industry and why we are calling for a change to the weekend model. We have been yelling this from the rooftops for over 15 years.

A lot of doula schools focus somewhat on the emotional and physical support side, but skip over how you actually turn this into income.

And then people finish their training and think… “Ok cool… now what?”

If you want to understand why this happens so often, read this.

Because your training should set you up to work in the field of reproductive health and justice, not just learn a little bit about what you do as a doula.

You Do Not Need Everything Perfect to Start Your Doula Business

Let’s remove some pressure right now.

You do not need a perfect website (or any website TBH)
You do not need a full brand (yes, you can just use your name)
You do not need a huge social media following (in fact, this doesn’t matter at all)

You need clarity and action. Most doulas get their first doula clients through real life connections:

People they know.
People in their community.
Referrals from friends and family and previous clients.

This work is trust based. The care we do is intimate and the services are pricey, so you want to have your community KNOW you and TRUST you. And trust does not come from a logo, it comes from relationships.

If you want a deeper breakdown of how doulas actually get clients, this blog will help.

We LOVE the idea of the messy start. When you just jump in and start working with folks you learn what needs to happen for better care, what clients are looking for, what edits you need to make to your contracts and worksheet and intake forms.

You actually really need that feedback from clients to see if you are on the right path and how to make stuff even better.

So many doulas hold back to make it perfect but you don’t know what perfect is because you don’t know exactly what your clients need and what your business needs to look like to give the people exactly what they want.

When bebo mia started as a full service agency in Toronto in 2009/10 we discovered a lot of the work we did we threw away very quickly because our clients were not really into it. We renamed our course because the cute names and branding we had worked so hard on did not appeal to them because they did not know what the offering was. We had spent hours on class curriculum that no one was interested in and then had to rebuild courses that they really wanted.

Your First Doula Clients Are Everything for your Doula Business

Your first one or two clients will teach you more than anything else.

They will help you understand:

What kind of support you love offering
What feels hard
What you want to adjust
How to communicate clearly

And most importantly, they become your first testimonials. And in a doula business, word of mouth is everything.

People do not hire doulas the same way they hire other services. They want to feel safe and connected. They want to hear from someone who has worked with you before.

That is how momentum builds.

PROTIP ALERT: We have a tool that will help you build this step by step, check it out here

You Can Start While You Are Still in Your Doula Training

This surprises people a lot. In fact, we get asked this more times that you could imagine. We have a whole blog about that here since it is a top asked question.

In case you skipped the blog (go and read it after though), you do not have to wait until your doula certification is complete to begin building your doula business.

In fact, many doulas begin connecting with clients during their training. We had a student last year that got 9 clients while in the program and collected over $14,000 in her first month!

You just need to be clear about where you are at, what you offer, and what support you have behind you. That “learning while doing” model is what actually builds confidence.

Because waiting until you feel 100 percent ready is usually just fear in a nice outfit. You are ready to support people, you are called to this work because you naturally are a caregiver. You do not need to have all the answers because the phrase ‘that is a great question, let me get you an answer’ is reasonable to say when needed.

Decide What Kind of Doula You Want to Be

Not every doula business looks the same. Some people focus on being a birth doula and attend a few births per month. Some build a steady schedule as a postpartum doula with more predictable hours. Some become a full spectrum doula and work across fertility, birth, postpartum, and loss.

There is no one right way to do this. That is the great thing about having a doula business… it is wildly flexible.

The key is building something that fits your life… sustainably.

If you are trying to understand what that could look like long term, read this.

Because your business can evolve as you do, and trust me, you will go through your own stages and phases of business. See what we did there? Just like birth… get it (hee hee)?

Know How Many Doula Clients You Actually Need

A big part of building a sustainable doula business is knowing your numbers. Yes, put pen to paper, not just thinking about these numbers.

How many clients do you want per month?

How much do you want to earn?

What does your life realistically allow?

Some doulas work part time with one or two clients a month. Others build fuller schedules.

There is flexibility here, but you need to be intentional.

This will help you map it out. Because guessing leads to burnout real fast.

Community Building Will Grow Your Business Faster Than Social Media

Your business will not grow because you posted a Reel. Nope, nope, nope.

It will grow because people know you, trust you, and talk about you.

That means:

Showing up in your community
Building relationships
Connecting with other providers
Being visible in real spaces

Social media can support your business, but it should not be your entire strategy.

If you rely only on passive marketing, it will feel like getting clients is hard. Like, really hard.

Because it is.

Here is the best tool that will get you clients next week. Actually.

This Is a Business, Not Just a Calling

This part matters. Doula work is meaningful, emotional, powerful, and life changing.

And it is also a business.

That means:

  • You need pricing
  • You need boundaries
  • You need systems
  • You need to think about sustainability

The doulas who build long term careers are the ones who embrace both the calling and the structure needed to make it sustainable for themselves and everything else that they hold in their lives.

They care deeply and they build their doula business smart.

So… How Do You Start Your Doula Business?

You start as soon as you get the first flicker that you feel ready. Like, really, the first ‘maybe I can take a client’… run with that and give it momentum.

You start with the training that actually supports you.

You start with one client. Yup, just one, that is all it takes.

You start with conversations. Again, this tool will help you slay your doula business growth.

You start messy. And you get cleaned up and organized as you go!

Because clarity comes from doing, not from waiting and thinking and planning with no feedback from real clients.

If you are exploring online doula training and wondering if you can really build a doula business from this, the answer is yes.

But it does not happen by accident. It happens when you treat your doula certification as one step and not the end.

And then you build from there.
