Can You Make a Career Out of Being a Doula?

We love that you are asking this as this is one of the smartest questions you can ask before you sign up for an online doula training.

So many folks make the mistake of instead asking “would I love this work?” when they get on a call with us… and honestly, if you are here, you probably already know the answer is yes. We also get a lot of the question “is birth work meaningful?” or something around wanting a meaningful job, and yes, obviously, it is.

The real question is whether you can build an actual doula career without burning yourself out, panicking about money, or ending up with a doula certification and no clue what to do next.

The short answer is yes, you absolutely can make a career out of being a doula.

But you need the right doula training, realistic expectations, and a plan for making money as a doula.

What Does a Career Doula Actually Look Like?

A lot of people picture a doula career as one thing: a birth doula permanently on call with a bag by the door waiting for babies to arrive.

That is one version of the job, but it is not the only one. I mean, that was mine for the first 10 years of my doula career, not going to lie.

However, many career doulas build flexible businesses that include multiple services. Some focus on birth support while others build a mix of postpartum care, classes, consulting, or digital education.

When I was starting out, I was a birth doula only and then I added lactation (1st year) and shortly after childbirth education (2nd year). I did my postpartum training (2nd year), but did not feel as called to that work.

I share this because a doula career is anything but linear! If you want to see how wide the possibilities really are, this article breaks down the different paths doulas take after their doula certification.

A career doula might attend births every month, or they might combine client care with teaching or mentoring. The career is so wildly flexible, which is one of the reasons many people are drawn to this work in the first place.

How Much Money Can You Make as a Doula?

Let’s talk numbers because, well, this is a job that needs to pay the bills while you are out there changing the world and protecting families!

According to our breakdown of U.S. doula income (this is the same in Canada), doulas can earn anywhere from about $30,000 to well over $100,000 per year depending on location, services offered, and client volume.

Head here to read all the nitty gritty and the full breakdown.

Birth doulas often charge between $1,000 and $3,500+ per birth depending on experience and location. Postpartum doulas typically charge hourly rates which are about $30 to $55+ per hour.

Some doulas intentionally keep their schedule smaller and work part time. Others grow their client roster and add additional services over time.

The point is that making money as a doula is absolutely possible, but like any small business it requires skill, strategy, and patience. And if you don’t know about business, your doula training must cover this! Fun fact: our full spectrum doula training has a full business training within the course that is live and will hold your hand through the whole process.

Why Your Doula Training Matters for a Career

Here is where things get real for a minute and I am not going to sugar coat this at all!

If you want to be a career doula, your training matters a lot. Like, more that you know…

A good online doula training program does not just teach birth support skills. It also teaches scope of practice, client communication, business foundations, and sustainability.

Unfortunately, a lot of weekend doula trainings skip those pieces entirely. They rush through the content, hand you a certificate, and leave you to figure out the hardest parts on your own.

If you are serious about building a long term career, this is something you need to understand before choosing a program.

We explain this in detail here (please read it if you are even considering one of the big brand weekend trainings!!).

Short version? Speed does not equal preparation.

The Reality of Doula Work Day to Day

Another important piece of becoming a career doula is understanding what the work actually looks like on a daily basis.

It is not just attending births or postpartum shifts.

Doula work includes client communication, prenatal meetings, education, emotional support, scheduling, community relationships, and sometimes a fair bit of late night coffee. As I am allergic to caffeine, I enjoy some peanut butter M&Ms as a 3 am pick me up!

If you want a clear picture of the daily rhythm of this work, we have laid it all out here.

Understanding the real job helps people decide whether it fits their personality, energy levels, and lifestyle which is important before you start something new, sweet doula dreamer.

Can You Start as a Part Time Doula?

Another thing many people do not realize is that most career doulas do not start full time.

Many begin as a part time doula while keeping another job or raising children.

That approach lets you build experience, referrals, and confidence gradually instead of putting huge pressure on yourself right away.

We talk about that transition here if you are considering doula work and have another part time job

And if you are wondering whether the work fits your personality and life goals, this reality check guide is worth reading too (we love a checklist, quiz or guide!)

So, Can You Build a Career as a Doula?

Yes.

But the doulas who succeed long term usually do a few things differently.

They choose strong doula training instead of the fastest or cheapest certification they can find.

They understand the realities of the job, including the emotional intensity and unpredictable hours.

And they treat their doula certification as the beginning of a profession, not the end of a course. So many folks get stuck at this part because they don’t have a framework like they did with their doula training checklist.

If you want another honest look at the profession, this article is a good one to read next:

Doula work is meaningful, flexible, and deeply human. Heck, it is literally saving lives, increasing parent satisfaction, catching postpartum mood disorders early, supporting better birth, lowering trauma and so much more.

And yes, it can absolutely be a real career. The key is building it intentionally and having someone holding your hand as you go through this incredible transition. Just like you want to do for families through fertility, birth and parenting… best part, we got you here at bebo mia!
