A Life Built Around Caring for Others

I’m Brittney.

If you had told me a few years ago that I’d be stepping into the birth world, I probably would have laughed… and then felt a lump in my throat, because deep down, I’ve always known birth work has been calling me all along.

I’m a mom, a wife, a caregiver, and someone who has built my life around showing up for others in the quiet, everyday ways that don’t always get recognized but matter deeply. My days are filled with caring for children, supporting families, and creating spaces where people feel safe, seen, and loved.

Realizing the Calling Had Always Been There

Looking back, birth work has always been pulling me in I just didn’t fully realize it at the time. I’ve found myself in labor and delivery rooms more often than the average person, holding someone’s hand, offering comfort, just being there in those really raw, powerful moments. The same goes for postpartum showing up however I can, helping families settle into that new, overwhelming, beautiful season.

Those moments stayed with me.

But my path still didn’t always feel clear.

Like a lot of people i’ve had moments where I questioned what was possible for me. Whether I could take up space. Whether I was allowed to dream bigger than what I could already see in front of me.

Building a Future Her Children Can See

And the truth is, my kids changed that for me.

I want them to grow up in a world where they don’t feel like they have to shrink themselves to fit in. I want them to see that it’s okay to build a life that reflects who you really are even if that path looks different, even if it’s hard, even if no one around you has done it before. I want them to look at me and know, you can still go after your dreams.

Finding Community Through Bebomia

That’s why this scholarship means so much to me.

Being chosen for the Queers for Queer Care Award feels incredibly personal. It feels like someone saw not just where I am, but where I’m trying to go and believed in me enough to help me get there. That kind of support is something I don’t take lightly.

I chose to train with Bebo Mia because I was looking for more than just education. I was looking for community. A place where families like mine are not just accepted, but centered. Where care is intentional, inclusive, and rooted in real understanding.

Creating Spaces Where Every Family Belongs

Because to me, being a birthworker isn’t just about birth. It’s about holding space in moments that feel big and overwhelming. It’s about making sure people feel safe, heard, and respected. It’s about showing up for families in a way that reminds them they are not alone. It’s about care that actually feels like care.

After the program, I plan to step into this work alongside someone I deeply trust, building something together that reflects both of our hearts for families. What started as a friendship connection has grown into a shared vision, and I’m really excited to grow into this role with someone who is just as passionate about this work as I am.

Growing With Intention and Compassion

Together, we want to create something that feels different.

Something warm.

Something safe.

Something that reaches families who might not always feel seen in traditional spaces, especially queer families.

I don’t have every detail perfectly mapped out yet, but I know what I’m building is rooted in intention, compassion, and community. And I know that it matters.

This opportunity feels like the beginning of something bigger than me and I’m ready for it.

I believe being a doula is something you carry deep within you. It’s who you are at your core. And for me, I think it’s something I’ve been becoming and maybe even been all along.
