A Journey Rooted in Ancestry and Divine Purpose

Birth Justice, Ancestral Roots & Divine Purpose: My Journey with Bebo Mia

By Samira — Birth Justice Award Winner

Hey beautiful souls,

My name is Samira. I’m a plant-based wellness advocate, nutritionist, and full-spectrum doula. I serve women in every stage of their sacred journey — from fertility to labor and delivery, through postpartum and beyond.

Discovering a Legacy Passed Through Generations

I was raised in Tampa, Florida, but I was born in Long Island, New York, and I truly believe that my passion for birth work runs through my bloodline.

When I joined the doula community back in November 2024, I discovered that one of the great women on my mother’s side — my ancestor in Melbourne, Florida — was also a doula. She birthed countless babies in her community decades ago, and I believe her gift flowed through the generations to reach me today.

That realization made everything come full circle. It felt like confirmation that I was walking in divine purpose — continuing the work that my ancestor started, honoring women, and welcoming life into the world with grace and reverence.

A Natural Connection to Children and Care

Children have always held a special place in my heart. They’re drawn to me in ways that always make me smile. Whether family, friends, or complete strangers — children seem to sense the energy I carry. I think it’s because I’ve always nurtured the innocence and purity within myself — that God-like love that I keep in my mind, body, and aura.

I live with a heart full of compassion, and I think children can feel that. It’s what drives me to serve mothers, families, and the new souls they bring to Earth with the gentleness and honor they deserve.

A Deep Commitment to Birth Justice

When I saw the opportunity for the Birth Justice Award, I knew instantly it spoke to my heart.

I’ve always been passionate about women — especially Black, Indigenous, Aboriginal, and American women — having their birth rights honored and their voices respected.

Too often, I’ve seen and heard stories of women being dismissed in hospital settings. Their birth plans are ignored, their pain is minimized, and their intuition as mothers is overshadowed by systems that don’t fully see them.

The Birth Justice Award symbolizes a shift toward restoring that balance — reminding us that birth is sacred and that every woman, regardless of background or circumstance, deserves to be seen, heard, and supported in full.

When Loss Became a Turning Point

One experience that truly deepened my purpose was when a close friend of mine — my nail tech at the time — lost her baby after her baby shower in 2022. It was heartbreaking. I had been helping her with her fertility journey, guiding her through foods that supported her pregnancy like sweet potatoes and electrolyte-rich plant-based foods, helping her keep her body nourished and her baby strong.

When she miscarried, it was devastating — but it also awakened something in me. It taught me the importance of supporting women not just through pregnancy, but also through postpartum and loss.

Birth work isn’t only about the arrival of life — it’s about holding space for transformation, for grief, for love in all its forms.

I learned that as doulas, we’re called to walk with women through every phase: fertility, pregnancy, postpartum, and even healing after loss.

Finding Alignment With Bebomia’s Mission

I remember when Bebo Mia followed me on Instagram — that moment caught my attention. I started exploring their work, and what truly drew me in was their diversity, inclusivity, and commitment to global connection.

Their programs spoke directly to my spirit — virtual trainings that empower birthing people, support postpartum healing, and celebrate Indigenous and Aboriginal birth practices.

As an Indigenous and Mexican woman who’s still deepening my connection to my roots, it meant so much to find a training space that honors the sacredness of ancestral birth work.

Bebo Mia’s mission aligns beautifully with mine — they teach from a place of respect, inclusivity, and cultural awareness. They don’t just train doulas; they nurture leaders and healers who understand that birth is not a one-size-fits-all experience.

Through Bebo Mia, I’ve found a community of like-minded souls — birth workers who are passionate, heart-centered, and dedicated to reclaiming traditional, holistic practices that our ancestors once lived by.

A Calling That Blends Spirituality and Care

For me, being a birthworker is both spiritual and ancestral. It’s not just a job — it’s a calling.

I see myself as a woman of service, someone who serves selflessly while honoring my own divine balance.

When I show up for mothers and families, I’m not just offering support — I’m holding sacred space. I want women to know that they are not alone. That they are seen, safe, and loved.

I want them to feel that their birthing experience can be calm, empowered, and connected to something greater than themselves.

Integrating Nutrition, Healing, and Birthwork

As a plant-based nutritionist, I also infuse my doula work with the healing power of foods and herbs.

I teach women how to prepare their bodies before pregnancy — cleansing and detoxing naturally, so their wombs are fertile, strong, and ready to welcome life.

During pregnancy, I guide them toward nutrient-dense, grounding meals that sustain both mother and baby.

And in postpartum, I focus on restoring their energy, balancing hormones, and nurturing their spirit through food, rest, and gentle self-love.

Ultimately, I want every woman I serve to walk away knowing that she has a village — that she’s supported not just physically, but emotionally, spiritually, and ancestrally.

A Vision for Holistic and Ancestral Care

After completing my training with Bebo Mia, I envision building a holistic wellness and birth practice that merges everything I love — nutrition, plant-based medicine, sexuality education, genealogy, and ancestral healing.

I want to guide families to reconnect with their ancestral wisdom, learning from the foods, herbs, and healing traditions that sustained their lineage.

By understanding their genealogy, they can reclaim the practices that bring them strength and longevity — from womb to generation.

Expanding Into Education, Intimacy, and Community Healing

In my work, I’ll continue to focus on sexual education and sacred intimacy, teaching women and couples how to honor their bodies and their connections with intention and balance — both with and without physical intimacy.

I see this evolving into a bridge between doula care, nutrition, and relationship healing — creating a space where people can learn to love, nourish, and honor each other holistically.

My dream is to see families thriving, raising children in environments rooted in love, truth, and ancestral knowledge.

Because when women are supported, the entire community flourishes.

A Spiritual Confirmation of the Path Ahead

Winning the Birth Justice Award feels like more than just receiving a scholarship — it feels like spiritual confirmation that I am exactly where I’m meant to be.

It’s an acknowledgment of the path I’ve been walking — guided by my ancestors, grounded in divine purpose, and devoted to women, children, and families.

Birth work is sacred. It’s where life begins, where legacy continues, and where love expands beyond generations.

I’m grateful to Bebo Mia for creating a community that uplifts women like me — women who are determined to bring balance, justice, and love back into the birthing space.

This is only the beginning of my journey, and I can’t wait to keep walking this path — guided by purpose, fueled by passion, and anchored in the belief that every birth deserves to be honored as divine.

With gratitude and love,
Samira
