A Calling to Care: Dejhana Ingram’s Path to Supporting Families

Training as a Birth Doula, Postpartum Doula, and More

Doula training should feel expansive, not limiting. At bebo mia, our online doula training prepares students for the full spectrum of care, including fertility, birth, postpartum, and loss. Through our doula scholarship program, we have invested over $500,000 into future doulas through scholarships and awards. This blog is written by one of those recipients, and reflects the kind of care, leadership, and growth we prioritize in our doula certification programs.

Hi, my name is Dejhana Ingram. I am a registered nurse and a proud mother of three amazing boys—ages 13, 7, and 1. I’ve spent most of my life in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and from a young age, I knew that caring for others was my calling.

A Heart for Caregiving

My heart has always been drawn to nurturing people of all ages, which made nursing feel like the natural path for me.

Growing up, I didn’t have the best upbringing, but I held onto the belief that love exists wherever I choose to bring it. I have always led with compassion, embracing people regardless of their skin color or background.

My Experience with Motherhood

Motherhood came early for me—I gave birth to my first child at 17. At the time, I wasn’t fully aware of the challenges Black women face in maternal healthcare.

That lack of awareness led to uncertainty, fear, and a deep feeling of not being heard or supported during my hospital birth experience.

Understanding the Importance of Support

By the time I had my second child at 22, I was more conscious of my surroundings in the healthcare system, but I still didn’t fully understand how advocacy and support could transform the birth experience.

These experiences planted the seed for my desire to help other mothers feel heard, supported, and empowered during pregnancy and birth.

Why I Chose Doula Work

Becoming a doula feels like a natural extension of the care I already provide as a nurse and mother. It allows me to support families in a more personal and continuous way during one of the most important moments of their lives.

Looking Ahead

Through this scholarship and my training with bebo mia, I’m excited to deepen my knowledge and provide compassionate support to families in my community.
