How much should I charge as a postpartum doula?

[wpseo_breadcrumb]

Babes… let’s talk about money.

You may be feeling a bit cringe about this and you are not alone. This is a major stumbling block for a lot of doulas.

We know what exactly is happening for you, because we have been there! Sound familiar? You go through your doula training, you are excited, maybe a little nervous, picturing yourself holding babies, making tea, helping someone finally get a nap… and then you sit down to figure out your pricing.

And your brain just… stops.

Or you panic a little and throw out a number that feels “safe”… which usually means too low. We have a formula that will give you the right rate for you, so keep reading. Also, please note our thoughts about undercutting doulas, you will find it further down the post. It is super important!

So let’s slow this down and actually walk through it together.

How much should a postpartum doula charge?

The honest answer is that it depends. I know, not helpful at first glance, but stay with me. You will know what to charge by the end of this post.

Most postpartum doulas or postnatal doulas charge somewhere between $25 to $50 per hour, and often more depending on where you live and how experienced you are. Don’t be limited by these numbers, they are just a range!

We want you to remember as you are starting to decide what folks are going to pay you for your care – pricing is not just about time. Let’s say this in a slightly different way. Your services are about the hours you spend with them PLUS it is about what you did to get there.

Your lived experiences.
Your education.
Your confidence.
Your ability to problem solve.
Your ability to help someone feel calm when everything feels chaotic.

That is what people are paying for.

The postpartum period is full of moments where parents are worrying:

“Is this normal?”

“Am I doing this right?”

“Why is this so hard?”

And you get to step in and steady the whole situation and probably be the first person that provided a non judgmental listening ear. You are the person they do not need to justify why they are bottle feeding or bed sharing or lying in for 40 days or using disposable diapers. You are just there to hold their hand, answer their questions, provide resources, and help them feel less alone.

That has value. A lot of value.

Why postpartum care is one of the most sustainable parts of doula work

This is a super awesome part about being a postpartum doula! Postpartum work is scheduled.

You are not sitting around waiting for your phone to ring or wondering if you are about to miss dinner because someone just went into labor. I mean, to be clear, birth doulas are not actually sitting around waiting for their phone to ring lol.

As a postpartum doula, aka postnatal doula, you know when you are working and you know when you are off. This means you can plan your life in a way that actually feels doable.

That matters for a lot of folks depending on what else you have in your life.

But it is helpful to know how easy it is to build your postpartum doula practice around your real life. Mornings, evenings, weekends, a few shifts here and there. It does not have to take over everything.

This is why so many doulas build really strong, steady doula businesses with postpartum care. It gives you structure without losing flexibility.

Also, there is a huge demand for postpartum doulas right now!  ←Read this to find out why

Overnight postpartum doula rates deserve their own moment

Ok, let’s talk about overnights for a second, because this is where things can shift financially in a big way.

Overnight shifts are usually charged as a flat rate, not hourly, and most postpartum doulas charge somewhere between $250 to $500 per night.

Now yes, you are working. You are there for feeding, soothing, and making sure everything is safe and supported for baby. Sometimes parents want baby brought to them to nurse in the night and sometimes parents just want you to co-sleep with them in a spare room. The shifts can look totally different depending on the client.

What it looks like can also wildly depend on the baby and their disposition and mood that night. You may be able to sleep during your shift, just waking when the baby does, careful to get them ASAP so the parent or parents don’t wake up from the cries.

Some overnight postpartum doulas roll up with a sac containing their pillows and comforter while others just arrive with their laptop or a book. You get to decide what makes more sense for you and what your clients are comfortable with.

The great thing about overnight care is it ends around 6am so you can head to another job or get your kids off to school or just head home for a nap.

It does mean you can earn solid income without completely burning yourself out.

We have students who build a big portion of their income just from a few overnight shifts a week. It is one of the most efficient ways to grow your doula business without packing your schedule full of daytime hours. 5 or 6 overnights a month can earn you around $2000 which is an awesome income while new parents get that life changing sleep they need.

The skill for Postpartum Doulas that will change your pricing the fastest

If you want to increase your rates as a postpartum doula, this is the one.

Lactation.

Infant feeding is one of the biggest stress points in early postpartum for new parents. People are overwhelmed, tired, and often getting conflicting advice from everywhere. Like everywhere!

If you can confidently step into that and support breastfeeding or chestfeeding, everything changes.

You are no longer just a great helper and listener. You are solving a problem that feels urgent and emotional and constant.

That is where your value increases. Like, a lot!

This is why becoming a certified lactation educator can shift both your confidence and your income.

If that is something you are thinking about, you can look at the certification here. It is one of the most direct ways to deepen your impact, increase your client load, and charge accordingly.

Specialties make your work clearer and more valuable

Not every postpartum doula needs a niche, but having one can make things a lot easier. We cannot recommend you niching enough. We talk about it constantly in our programs!

When you start to work with specific types of families or situations, like multiples, post cesarean recovery, NICU transitions, or mental health support, you become known for that. And when someone is in that exact situation, they are not looking for “any doula.”

They are looking for you.

That clarity makes it easier to book clients and it gives you room to charge more without feeling like you are constantly explaining your worth.

You will be able to significantly raise your rates when you are offering a speciality service!

Why full spectrum doula work opens everything up

If you zoom out a little, postpartum work can be one piece of a much bigger picture.

A full spectrum doula might offer postpartum care alongside birth support, fertility work, loss support, or education.

That mix creates stability and a deeper understanding of reproductive health as a whole instead of just a snippet.

It means your income is not tied to one type of work or one schedule. It gives you room to shift depending on what your life looks like in different seasons.

If you are thinking about building something long term, this is where things really start to open up:

Because now you are not just picking a service. You are building a whole ecosystem and that can only benefit your clients and your bottom line.

A quick reality check about your doula rates

If you are feeling exhausted, stretched thin, or resentful… Your pricing is probably too low.

This work requires presence and energy and for you to be able to walk into someone’s home and actually hold space for them.

You cannot do that well if you are running on empty, babes.

Your rates need to support your life too. Rest, recovery, your own responsibilities, your own joy. All of that matters.

So… what should you charge for your postpartum doula services?

Start somewhere that makes sense for your area.

Here are the steps:

  1. Go and find out what the doulas in your area charge. Like, right after you finish reading this, go do that.
  2. Write down how much you would like to make in the next 12 months.
  3. Then write down how many hours per week you can work and multiply that number by 52
  4. Then do some basic math (we did it for you so that it is super easy!)

(How much you want to make in the year) / (How many hours per week) = $ Rate

Now, did that rate number fall in the range of the local postpartum doulas?

If it did, great! You have your rate. Get out there and get some doula clients.

If it is outside the low end, raise the rate to fall in the middle of the range. Please do not come into the doula community and drive your local prices down. Folks are trying to make a living doing this and your low rate makes folks question the living wage for doulas. Care work is already an underpaid field and we need to make the collective agreement to increase the overall perceived value and wages doulas make.

If it is outside the high end, you can keep it there if it is not too far. If you have a specialty, then you can expect that it will be outside that range. You also may consider adding overnights to bring your rate up. You can also offer classes to make up the difference in your income. Finally, offering lactation support will increase your revenue significantly.

And then you keep on growing your practice and client load. As your skills grow, your confidence grows. As your confidence grows, your pricing should follow.

Remember, you are not locked into your starting rate forever.

A real doula business supports you while you support others.

And that deserves to be sustainable, consistent, and yes… well paid.
