Hi! My name is Madison Tucker and I am the proud recipient of the Informed and Inclusive Birth Worker scholarship! I am so excited for this new journey and am so thankful for Bebo Mia. In my spare time I enjoy crafting, reading and educating others on important social political topics. I enjoy a cozy fire on drizzly days, think mayo is better than miracle whip and cannot be trusted in a craft store. I have two adorable cats (Ramsey and Mimi) and one partner (Nick, lol). Nick is my giant teddy bear of a cheerleader and has really supported me through the thick of it.
Realizing her true life purpose
I have a background in psychology and have plans for my Masters in social work in the near future. My goal is to blend my Doula and counseling work together! Until recently, I had plans to pursue law and be a lawyer. I felt this was my best path to make a difference. Once I had more experience in the field, I realized this was not for me. Now, I am currently a nanny for a few local families. I am enjoying applying my education in development to aid in the rearing of these little humans and to be a resource to the families I work for.
Overcoming Adversity and Embracing Growth Through Education
I have had several major life events recently (Illness, moving across country, house fire, etc) and without this scholarship, I would not be able to have access to this education. While I could have chosen any other training that may have been less, I felt Bebo Mia was the most accessible for my learning style and most importantly, I felt like Bebo Mia’s culture and mission aligned with my belief system the most.
Additionally, I chose Bebo Mia because of the flexibility of the program, the transparency I have seen on what is taught as well as the efforts to support students. I am genuinely hungry to be learning again and earning a scholarship, allows me to afford to take this leap and put on my learners cap again.
The Inspiration Behind the Journey to Becoming a Doula
In recent years with Roe V Wade being overturned I have become increasingly more involved in advocacy; In addition to seeing my close friends and family struggle through their pregnancies, loss, and postpartum. These experiences have lit a fire under me in the best way, showing me my true purpose in this life; to be the cheerleader, pillar, amp or whatever I need to be for those that are often silenced.
I believe all experiences are worthy of extra care and support. I want to be a Doula because I am passionate about safe, informed birth. I believe everyone deserves the chance for a positive birth and I want to be able to do everything in my power to support clients through their birth and beyond. Providing a safe space for birthers to heal and transition is also very important to me. In the future I hope for the chance to also share my knowledge with parents and professionals alike.
Envisioning a Bright Future as a Doula
This leads me to what my plans are after the program. Truthfully, I might need a whole chapter to share everything I hope and dream of. I hope to pursue primarily postpartum doula work with a focus on intersectionality, communities that may face higher rates of birth mortality; As well as neurodiversity, trauma, queerness or other barriers to safe and positive birth/parenting journeys.
I would also like to be able to take on a few families that would otherwise be unable to afford such a service. At the end of the day, I want to be what I am needed in whatever capacity that is. Most importantly, I want to be accessible.
