Carrying the Legacy Forward: Andrea Weaver’s Journey as a Second-Generation Doula

How Doula Certification Can Change Your Path

Every scholarship story at bebo mia is part of something bigger. Our online doula training is built to support future birth doulas, postpartum doulas, fertility doulas, and full spectrum doulas with real skills, real community, and real support. We have donated over $500,000 in doula scholarships and doula awards to help reduce barriers to entry into this work. This blog is written by one of those recipients, and reflects the kind of care and leadership we are building through our doula training programs.

I’m Andrea Weaver, a second-generation Full Spectrum Doula, educator, and community builder. I’m originally from Oakland, California, and now live and practice in Los Angeles, where I support families across the reproductive continuum and mentor new doulas stepping into this work.

Growing Up Around Care Work

My path into birthwork wasn’t random—it was inherited, shaped by the people and experiences that raised me. I grew up with a deep respect for care work and for the wisdom passed down in community. I was surrounded by people who showed up for each other in vulnerable moments, and I carry that legacy forward in everything I do.

Commitment to Lifelong Learning

Even though I’ve been in this field for years, I’m committed to lifelong learning. Birthwork continues to evolve, and so do the needs of the families we serve. That’s why I applied for this scholarship—not because I needed certification to prove what I already know, but because ongoing education is essential to staying grounded, effective, and connected in this work.

The Importance of Continued Education

While certification can be a step toward professional growth, for me it represents something deeper: a commitment to refining my skills, expanding my perspective, and strengthening the ways I show up for the communities I serve.

Looking Ahead

I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue growing as a birthworker, educator, and advocate for families navigating pregnancy, birth, and postpartum experiences.
