5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Becoming A Birth Worker Entrepreneur

When you’re thinking about starting your business as a birth worker, it’s so common if there are times when you may feel frozen and stuck, or other times when you feel like you don’t know what steps to take to get started and move forward.

But no worries, you do not have to Doula this alone, we are with you every step of the way!

Here are 5 things the #bebobaes wish had known before starting their birth worker businesses that would have helped them be better prepared for the all-important first few years.

1. Have a strong community with Birth Worker Entrepreneur!

Entrepreneurship gets really tough sometimes, and we are here with you every step of the way. You need folks to cheer you on, pick you up and dust you off and help you with accountability. Doing business alone can feel lonely… and we will make sure that you always feel like you are a part of a team and tight community!

2. Get the right team around you

Your team will be the folks who support your business, for example a bookkeeper, photographer, and IT support. This will also include your backup doula (please, please have this for every service you offer!). You will have your childcare folks here too. Bartering for childcare and meals with other shift workers or birthworkers is a really cost effective way to build your business. It is also the care team for YOU like your therapist or chiropractor. Make sure you are taking care of yourself so that you can keep doing the amazing good you are called to.

3. Focus on one thing at a time

There can be so many bright and shiny things to do as a business owner. New opportunities around every corner. This can lead to starting a whole bunch of projects and blogs and ideas and not seeing any of them through. Put on the business blinders once you start something and do it bite by bite until you are done. THEN start the next one. We promise you will look back each month and have way more completed this way!

4. Know your customer, not every customer is right for you

Niching could not be more important. You are not the right doula for everyone and that’s okay! You will make a bigger impact when you are working with your people. There will be a values alignment, time for the deeper work instead of just trying to understand the needs of your clients, and magic happens when you can solve the specific problem for your clients! Make sure you get to know the other birthworkers in your community! Then you can make sure to send folks who would be better for one of them their way and vice versa! Remember collaboration over competition. Yell this from the rooftops!

5. Write your mission statement!

Make sure you include your vision and values. This will be your road map and compass. You can hold any offer, collaboration, and idea up to your statement and ensure it is the right fit before you move forward. This part can feel skippable when you are excited to start your business. Please don’t skip it. If you need help with this, we got you!
